The needs and views of young Muslims about drug issues are poorly understood by policy makers. This project, a partnership between Mentor UK and Right Start Foundation funded by the DCSF, brought together 30 young Muslims to explore their views and to develop understanding of how to work with young people from the Muslim community. The young people came from Birmingham and Tower Hamlets, were between 12 and 18 years old. There were 23 young men and 7 young women involved over the course of the project, which ran from October 2007 to February 2008. The aims of the project were to: ● Develop the skills, confidence and self esteem of the young people; to help them get the knowledge and a positive attitude towards their own health; and play an active part in their local community. ● Ensure the views of young Muslims are heard by policy makers and commissioners of drug prevention services locally and nationally. The work with the young people consisted of 6 workshops (held separately in Birmingham and London), a number of positive activities and a residential weekend which brought the young people together. The workshops covered ● Group work and communication ● Confidence and self-esteem ● Drug prevention ● Health promotion ● What matters to you? ● Community participation and having your say The output from the project is this on-line toolkit for agencies wanting to involve young Muslims in drug prevention work. The project was externally evaluated by Ruth Joyce OBE and her full report can be downloaded here.
